EPF, together with 14 other organisations representing workers’ representatives, mobility stakeholders, cities, civil society, and environmental groups, has co-signed a joint statement calling for urgent investment in public transport in light of the ongoing oil crisis.
The statement highlights the need to reduce oil consumption, particularly in private mobility, and to shift towards public transport and active modes such as walking and cycling. Despite Europe’s extensive public transport systems, many citizens still rely on private cars, especially in rural and suburban areas where alternatives are limited. As fuel prices rise, this creates significant challenges for access to essential services, including work, healthcare and education. The signatories therefore call on policymakers to act urgently and ensure that public transport is available, accessible, attractive and affordable for all.
They also stress the need for stable long-term funding, better integrated services, sufficient staffing and continued support for the green and digital transition, alongside investment in active mobility.
The statement concludes that the current crisis should serve as a wake-up call to prioritise public transport as a strategic public service and ensure mobility for all.
