Kaunas has made a wonderful start to its year as European Capital of Culture. The opening events this month have motivated us all to try to travel to Kaunas at some point by the end of the year.

Unfortunately though, it is currently not possible to reach Kaunas by train! Re-opening cross-border rail services between Lithuania and its EU neighbours Poland and Latvia is essential to ensure EU’s policy coherence and to show that travelling in a sustainable way is available for all.

Indeed, the only passenger train to cross the Poland-Lithuania border in 2021 was the European Commission’s “Connecting Europe Express”, a train that no member of the general public could use.

This is why EPF co-signed an open letter to the EC asking for a return of the train to Kaunas!
