EPF’s 2026 annual conference will take place in Maastricht, the Netherlands on 5 & 6 June 2026. EPF member Rover (Walter Etty, EPF Board Member, and Marko van Werkhoven, event planner) is responsible for its organisation. The two-day event programme covers the following major themes: Public transport on the local and regional level; Cross-border public transport; Doubling international trains by 2030; Ticketing and passengers’ rights; Funding and financing sustainable mobility.
The conference will take place at the Limburg Provincial House in Maastricht: a historic building where the Treaty of Maastricht was signed in 1992, marking a major step toward closer cooperation within the European Communities. Maastricht is also located right in the middle of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine (EMR), which makes it an important hub for cross-border public transport to and from Belgium (Hasselt, Liège), Germany (Aachen) and beyond.
The current ‘’three-country-train’’ running between Liège, Maastricht and Aachen is a practical example of cross-border public transport in this region. While this service demonstrates successful cross-border cooperation, it also highlights opportunities for further improvement and opportunities in EU-regional collaboration on sustainable mobility.
In addition to sustainable cross-border mobility, the conference programme will address public transport at the local and regional level, exploring strategies of cities and regions to create more and better public space by reducing car dependency and prioritising walking and cycling, while keeping city centres accessible for workers, students, and visitors to shops and cultural venues.
Plenary sessions will further focus on key European challenges and opportunities, including how to double international train services by 2030, improve (through-)ticketing and passengers’ rights, and strengthen funding and financing mechanisms for sustainable mobility.
This year’s conference also aims to build a “winning coalition” of consumer and passenger organisations – alongside other stakeholders – to create a stronger collective mandate for securing structural funding for sustainable mobility. The shared ambition is to sign a “Maastricht Manifesto”, bringing together as many organisations as possible to commit to joint action in pursuit of this common goal.
